On July 3, 2020, Republic Act No. 11479 otherwise known as the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 was signed into law, and takes effect on July 18, 2000 after the requisite publication. The law is said to be the most recent effort of the government to address the issue of violent terrorism and extremism in the country. Under the law, persons who propose, incite, conspire, and participate in the planning, training and facilitation, and those who provide support to terrorists as defined under the law, or recruit members of a terrorist organization could face life imprisonment without parole. Many human rights groups, however signified concerns and oppositions over the alleged overbroad definition of what constitute terrorism. Furthermore, the law allows suspects to be detained without a judicial warrantor arrest for 14 days and can be extended by 10 more days, and placed under surveillance for 60 days, that also can be extended by up to 30 days, by the police or military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
